Substance Abuse

One of the most essential ingredients of any successful crime prevention program is an informed public. It is the goal of the Department to inform students and staff in a timely manner of any criminal activity or security problem that may pose a reasonable threat to their safety. Such information will be distributed to students through brochures, through newsletters, posted notices or student publications. Faculty and staff are informed through inter-department memos, bulletins and newsletters.

Individuals who need to be on campus other than during regular scheduled work hours must secure authorization prior to their arrival from the appropriate department chairperson or supervisor. The District Police should be notified of their presence. Many campus rooms and areas are protected by intrusion alarms and before entering these areas, The District Police should be called. It is the responsibility of those using rooms, offices or other areas to lock access doors, turn off lights and close all windows. Facilities Services staff and District Police staff will check many campus areas during off-hours, but the primary responsibility for security lies with the user.

Crime Reporting Procedures

The District Police Department has personnel available 24 hours a day. Emergencies, criminal activities, or other incidents may be reported at any time, day or night by calling:

EMERGENCIES: 911

DISTRICT POLICE: (619) 644-7654

EL CAJON POLICE: (619) 579-3311

S.D. POLICE DEPT: (619)531-2000

S.D. SHERIFF: (619) 565-5200

Classroom Emergency Phones

Emergencies and other requests for services can be reported to the District Police by using the classroom emergency phone located in each classroom.

Emergency Call Boxes

Emergencies and other requests for services can be reported to the District Police by using one of the colored Emergency Call Boxes located in the parking lots of both campuses.

Parking Lot Emergency Phones

Emergency Response Call Lines

At least one pay phone in each group of pay phones throughout both campuses is equipped with emergency speed dialing.

Dialing pound sign (#) + (1) will immediately connect the caller to the District Police Department. These phones are easily identified by a sign above the phone, and by a vinyl sticker displaying a two digit number that will enable the caller to relay their exact location to the officers. Emergency directions in Braille are also on each phone to assist the visually impaired. More information is available through the Disabled Student Services Offices.

Off-Campus Crime Information

Depending on the location of the crime, the San Diego Police Department, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department and El Cajon Police Department provide the District Police with crime data for the areas surrounding both campuses. The District Police will notify the college community when security problems arise.

District Property

No District property may be removed from the Grossmont or Cuyamaca campuses without prior written authorization from the department Dean or area supervisor. Unauthorized removal of District property from any of the two campuses is a violation of the law and violators may face prosecution by the District.

Sexual Assault

Information regarding prevention of sexual assault is available at the District Police office at Grossmont College and at the District Police office at Cuyamaca College.

A victim of sexual assault on campus should contact the District Police immediately for assistance at 644-7654 or by dialing #1 on Speed Dialing equipped pay phone located on both campuses or by using one of the Emergency Call Boxes.

Absolutely nothing related to an assault should be touched, moved or contaminated prior to police arrival. No cleaning of any person or item involved (including clothing, vehicle or other scene) should occur.

District Police officers understand that to be assaulted is extremely traumatic and officers will help victims obtain medical and other appropriate support services. An off-campus law enforcement agency will be contacted by District Police officers if specialized resources are needed to complete a criminal investigation.

Trained, caring counselors may be reached at any one of the following locations:

In addition to criminal charges, the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District has disciplinary procedures for cases of alleged sex offences with sanctions that may be imposed as appropriate.

Substance Abuse

The Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District Governing Board prohibits the unlawful possession, use or distribution of illicit drugs or alcohol by students on District property, and as part of any District sponsored or sanctioned activity.

Any student or employee in violation of this policy is subject to disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion from the District or termination of employment. The decision to take disciplinary action in any instance rests with the Governing Board after consideration of recommendations made by the site administrator and advisory panel.

The possession, use and sale of alcoholic beverages by anyone on District property is a violation of California Business and Professions Code 25608, as well as the Student Code of Conduct. The use, sale or possession of any illegal drug is a violation of state law and any person found in violation may be subject to arrest by federal, state, local or college law enforcement authorities. Criminal prosecution is separate from any administrative discipline that may be imposed by the District.

The District provides information on drug treatment and prevention through the Health Services Office. Contact the Health Services Office or Risk Management for more information.
