EL CAJON – – Photography workshops offered in conjunction with the Museum of Photographic Arts and a basic business class, Essential Skills for Workplace Success, are the last summer offerings at Grossmont College.

The annual Summer Photographic Workshop Series, which began in 1993, is coordinated by photography professor Suda House. It provides student photographers the opportunity to work with locally and nationally known photographers in areas including traditional photography, alternative processes, computer and digital imagery, and more.

Wendy Richmond, a Harvard University instructor and recipient of a Rockefeller Foundation residency in Bellagio, Italy, who works, teaches and exhibits bi-coastally, is the presenter of the July 13-15 workshop, “The Next Step: Creating a Body of Work.”

Jo Whaley, a studio photographer whose works have been collected by numerous museums, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the George Eastman House, will present the July 20-22 workshop, “The Studio: Photography of the Imagination.”

Sarah Van Keuren, whose background is an eclectic mix of painting, printmaking and photography, and who has taught gum bichromate, an alternative photographic print process that involves the use of dyes, at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia since 1980, will present the July 27-29 workshop, “Introduction to Gum Bichromate.”

The three-day workshops begin with a 6 p.m. orientation and 7 p.m. lecture, both on Thursdays at the museum in Balboa Park; and end with all-day workshops at Grossmont College starting at 9 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

The workshops, which are offered for college credit, carry museum tuition fees of $215 each for museum members and $260 for non-members. College fees for each workshop total $36.75.

Support for the workshops is provided by Grossmont College Foundation, Associated Students of Grossmont College, and Calumet Photographic.

For more information on the workshops, go to http://mopa.org/pages/edupages/summer.asp or call Suda House at (619) 644-7272.

Another late-summer offering, Essential Skills for Workplace Success, is offered through the business program, and includes instruction in basic keyboarding skills, as well as basic literacy and arithmetic. The four-unit course is offered for credit or no credit and runs July 31-Aug. 10.

“The material is valuable, particularly for those who have not been to college or who have been out of school for a while,” said instructor Mary Leslie. “We have four modules: basic English, basic math, life skills, and computer basics.”

Classes are from 8-4:30 Monday through Thursday for two weeks. For more information, contact Janell Branson at (619) 644-7247 by Friday, July 28.
