EL CAJON – – Summertime and the living’s easy. Add to that, the parking’s free at Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges. With gas prices climbing, the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District is offering students a little help by waiving the $18 parking fee for all summer classes offered between June 12 and Aug. 3. Enrollment fees remain at $26 per unit. Fee waivers are available for qualifying students and financial aid is an option to all. “The free parking may be an incentive for students to take advantage of the hundreds of course offerings Grossmont and Cuyamaca provide during the summer and year round,” said Chancellor Omero Suarez. “Community colleges offer an education bargain that can’t be beat.” Whether it’s to pick up a high-demand class that’s tough to get during the regular semester, or to get on the fast track toward completing transfer requirements for a four-year university, those lazy summer months ahead can be put to productive use. For the recent high-school grad, it’s a great way to ease into the campus scene before the fall rush. And there’s more scheduling flexibility than ever, with both colleges offering short-term courses varying in length from four, six to eight weeks. Classes begin June 12 and July 10, and are as easy to sign up for as it is to surf the ‘net. Both day and evening classes are available to accommodate busy schedules. Online courses are also offered, making it possible to earn college credit from home. “Blended” classes – those offered partly online and partly in the classroom – are also available. A full array of general education classes is offered for students planning to transfer to four-year universities. Many are designated equivalent to courses offered at California state universities, making the summer classes a quick, economical way for university students to satisfy GE requirements. At Cuyamaca College, anticipation is high for CADD 299, a new computer-aided drafting and design class in Architectural Revit, the newest 3-D modeling program for architectural applications that’s being hailed as the wave of the future. With Cuyamaca being the only community college in the county to offer a class in Revit, it’s expected to fill quickly. Other Cuyamaca offerings include a variety of computer and information science courses, including a new Web multimedia class, CIS 221, where students meet two evenings a week for eight weeks to learn to edit video and create DVDs. For those interested in learning the latest office skills, both Grossmont and Cuyamaca offer several Business Office Technology Flex Courses, or self-paced classes, in everything from basic keyboarding to computer programs, such as Microsoft Publisher and PowerPoint. At Grossmont College, beginning and intermediate classes in American Sign Language, ASL 120 and 121, are among the course offerings, in addition to Communication 128, an online class in global communication which has Grossmont students interacting via computer with Japanese university students. For a full listing of classes, class schedules are posted at both college Web sites and campus entrances. The schedule is needed for either telephone or on-line registration, once a student has applied for admission. New students must first file an application online or in the colleges’ admissions and records offices. Driving and campus maps, in addition to the online application and the registration service, WebConnect, are available at www.grossmont.edu and www.cuyamaca.edu. After applying with admissions, phone registration is also available by calling College Connection at (619) 668-4040 for either college. Grossmont College is at 8800 Grossmont College Drive in El Cajon. Cuyamaca College is at 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway in Rancho San Diego. Cuyamaca’s admissions and records office is located in the Student Services One-Stop Center near the campus’ Fury Lane entrance. Hours for both WebConnect and telephone registration are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, except on holidays. For more information, call Grossmont College at (619) 644-7186, or Cuyamaca College at (619) 660-4275. |
